Things to Do at Fort Frederica on St. Simons Island

by Tully

St. Simons Island has strong ties to Georgia's history, and much of that can be attributed toFort Frederica. The fort was built on our island in 1736 to defend the Georgia colony against Spanish attack. Nearly 300 years later, its ruins remain a reminder of that past and an exciting attraction for visitors to explore. Add Fort Frederica to your vacation itinerary while staying in one of Real Escapes Properties' vacation rentals on St. Simons Island, and uncover the site's rich history during your visit.

Visitor Center Museum

Start your exploration at the Visitor Center Museum and learn about the fort's rich history before exploring the grounds. Walk through the exhibits and see artifacts and images that chronicle the fort's 400-year history. The visitor center also has a movie theater where you can watch a 25-minute film about the fort.

Walking Tours

After learning about Fort Frederica and its history, we recommend exploring the grounds. Pick up a brochure at the visitor center and explore on your own or sign up for a guided walking tour and have one of our park rangers take you around the site. Make it even more fun by picking up a scavenger hunt and looking for clues as you go.
