About the Cannon’s Point Preserve
Cannon’s Point Preserve is known for its rich natural and cultural history. The preserve is linked to the lower Altamaha River delta, one of the world's most biologically rich ecosystems. These diverse ecosystems provide a sanctuary for many plants and animals to thrive, including the last intact maritime forest on the island.
Cannon’s Point Preserve was inhabited by Indigenous people almost 5,000 years ago. Today, many middens or debris sites can be found at the preserve, and interpretive signs highlight the history. This area was also the site of the Cannon’s Point Plantation, where enslaved people cultivated 200-300 acres of cotton and 25 acres of food crops. Please be respectful of this site during your visit.
